Music & Traditions

I listen to music everyday, and I love music but I don't have any specific traditions that involve music. My family is not a music-centered family. I mean, sure we listen to Christmas music in December but we don't have any other traditions I can think of.

I have two top favorite Christmas songs that I listen to every Christmas, with or without my family around. The first is O come O come Emmanuel specifically by King and Country. I like how King and Country adds a more upbeat rhythm to this timeless song. This song always makes me think of sitting by the fireplace (my house has a wood furnace- but most houses don't). This song also makes me feel warm and relaxed.

For my second Christmas song, I absolutely love the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but around the holidays I specifically love their song Christmas Eve. I'm going to be straight up-- I love everything about this song. I love how the electrophones, chordophones, drums and bells mesh so well together. (I didn't want to list out all the instruments that have been used in the song so I condensed it down to their ophones). I listen to this song every holiday and it makes me astonished how these musicians are so talented (then again they are professionals and I am not haha).

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed these songs as much as I do!

  2. My Savannah Wannah. Hey, mamas! We always speak, sometimes sharing a brief hug, so I couldn’t wait to dive into what music and traditions mean for you. I love how you honestly said your family wasn’t very music-centered, but you do listen to music during the holidays—a time of togetherness. I hadn’t heard these songs before, but they were beautiful.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel by King and Country is unlike any Christmas song I’ve ever heard. I love the storytelling, the upbeat rhythm, and how you said it reminds you of sitting next to a fireplace. Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Eve was also amazing—I almost dozed off until the 30-second mark, and then—boom!—all the instruments together, so explosive. I love Christmas :-); it’s like no other holiday!

Connecting it to my experience, as mentioned in the prompt, I reflected on how my grandmother listened to gospel and how that kind of music powered her when she took care of me, my siblings, and cousins. I think one of the biggest similarities between our blogs is the focus on emotion and meaning, and on music and ritual. In my family, we went to church every other Wednesday and Sunday, and afterward our house was flooded with gospel music. Like your family with Christmas, this was our ritual. These gospel songs are ones I still listen to today—sometimes imagining myself back in a particular setting, but mainly to feel better.

  3. Hey Savannah! Great blog! I LOVE King and Country and their songs and I love the one that you chose, it really resonates with me and my family's traditions as well! I remember listening to this song at Christmas time while driving to my grandma's house to open presents! I also loved your second song with the Orchestra, I always seem to doubt those in my mind—for some odd reason, but it always ends up changing my mind when I listen to it! Great blog!

  4. Hey Savannah! I absolutely love listening to Christmas songs, especially the one you picked out! I feel as though I always go back to a much simpler time and will always hear Christmas music, as everyone sits by the fire and grabs presents for everyone. Overall, it was a great choice of music!
