Music and Me

Hello! My name is Savannah Link, and I am a freshman at Converse. I hope to double major in Art Therapy and Psychology with a minor in American Sign Language (ASL). I'm from Carroll County Maryland, which is more rural and consists of more farm land than Spartanburg does. I've always liked listening to music but I didn't listen to it other than on the radio when I was younger. When I started high school, music and books became a safe space for me because it helped drown out everything around me. It was during ninth grade I got really into music and now I listen to music every single day. Music, is such a broad topic because there are so many genres, just like reading, and there's always something for everybody. In fourth grade I picked up a violin for the first time to play at my elementary school, and I fell in love with the instrument. I continued to play in school up until ninth grade because my guidance councilor made me pick between art and violin and didn't offer the option to pursue both. And I ended up choosing art. I still love to play, I wish I could play more often, and I'd like to play for an organization again one day.

My music taste is a little all over the place because I love listening to worship music, along with anything that I think sounds good, or if the lyrics resonate with me in a more personal way. I love listening to music that other people like because it tells me more about who they are as a person.

An example of a song I like right now is Eternity by Alex Warren. I was counting down the days until Alex Warren released this song, it is one of my favorite songs ever. I like this song because it can be taken (I think) two different ways (but probably more). I like this song because it has some Christian aspects but it isn't directly a Christian song. I also like this song because it reminds me about a lot of the books that I've read and the character's I love.

A song that resonates and connects with me on a personal level is Make it Through by Leanna Crawford. Leanna Crawford is one of my favorite Christian artists and this song is very encouraging and has helped me get through a lot during high school. One time I shared this song with my friends and they could also relate to it, and I think that's the powerful thing about music. A lot of different people with different life experiences can relate to the same song.

I will start off by saying, I do not like Taylor Swift, like at all. It doesn't matter what she's singing or how she's singing it, or the lyrics she's singing, I just do not like her voice. I'm not entirely sure why that is, but a few of my friends like her and I know she's popular but I just don't click with her. I could insert all of her songs she's ever written but I will not be doing that. I have picked one of her songs to encompass all of them. I know people like her songs, and that's totally fine with me, there's nothing wrong with that, I just am not a fan of her.

If you read this from top to bottom, thank you for reading my blog post. I hope you have a great rest of your day!

  1. Though Alex Warren isn't the typical genre I would listen to, I did enjoy the song! I enjoyed your blog and look forward to reading more entries in the future.

  2. Hey, Savannah! My favorite song you shared was "Eternity" by Alex Warren! I love that song and I love how deep his singing voice is! I also thought that it was interesting that you do not like "Red" by Taylor Swift. I am not her biggest fan either, but to me, "Red" is pretty alright. Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed reading your blog!

  3. Savannah! Hey! I find it pretty cool that you've played the violin. I had a somewhat similar situation of having to choose between music and art as I had a minor passion for guitar when I was younger. It's not quite my thing I've learned. I haven't actually heard any of the songs in your post up until your post, so it was a nice experience give or take. My favorite is probably Make It Though. Kind of has a similar feel to a song I like listening to called Get By, by Still Woozy.
