Our New Playlist

I love listening to music from other countries because I find it very interesting and  I love hearing and learning about other languages and the cultures and ways of life of other people around the world.  For the past couple of years Japanese music has been one of my favorite styles of music to listen to and is one of my favorite languages! I find it very interesting and fun. At one point over the years, I was learning Japanese and I would use Japanese music as a form of immersion to get a general understanding of the language. Any who, Japan is an island off the coast of Asia. I haven’t listened to much traditional Japanese music but I do enjoy the more modern music. One of my favorite Japanese songs is “Racing into the Night” by Yoasobi. I listened to this song so often during my last year in high school, so much to the point where I can sing it in Japanese haha. And just for fun I've included a song from a Japanese artist my dad shared with me via CD. I used to fall...

Music & Family

Image
When I hear the word Family  I immediately think of the people related to me by blood. Now, my family is not super musically inclined- like my dad likes to play music while he cooks and my mom listens to music when it comes on the car radio. And I like to think that my taste and exposure to music has drastically increased during my freshman year of high school because I had downloaded Spotify and got comfortable listening to a bunch of new music, now I listen to pretty much anything and everything that I think sounds good. But anyway- getting back on track. Like I said, my family aren't the biggest music people, my sister plays the flute and I play violin but that's about it. For this assignment I chose to interview my grandmother because she sings in the choir at her church, which I can relate to because I play violin for the orchestra at my church, First Baptist of Spartanburg.      During this conversation with my grandmother I asked her 8 ques...

Music & Traditions

Image
I listen to music everyday, and I love music but I don't have any specific traditions that involve music. My family is not a music-centered family. I mean, sure we listen to Christmas music in December but we don't have any other traditions I can think of.      I have two top favorite Christmas songs that I listen to every Christmas, with or without my family around. The first is O come O come Emmanuel specifically by King and Country. I like how King and Country adds a more upbeat rhythm to this timeless song. This song always makes me think of sitting by the fireplace (my house has a wood furnace- but most houses don't). This song also makes me feel warm and relaxed.      For my second Christmas song, I absolutely love the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but around the holidays I specifically love their song Christmas Eve. I'm going to be straight up-- I love everything about this song. I love how the electrophones, chordophones, drums and bells mesh so w...

Music and Me

Image
Hello! My name is Savannah Link, and I am a freshman at Converse. I hope to double major in Art Therapy and Psychology with a minor in American Sign Language (ASL). I'm from Carroll County Maryland, which is more rural and consists of more farm land than Spartanburg does. I've always liked listening to music but I didn't listen to it other than on the radio when I was younger. When I started high school, music and books became a safe space for me because it helped drown out everything around me. It was during ninth grade I got really into music and now I listen to music every single day. Music, is such a broad topic because there are so many genres, just like reading, and there's always something for everybody. In fourth grade I picked up a violin for the first time to play at my elementary school, and I fell in love with the instrument. I continued to play in school up until ninth grade because my guidance councilor made me pick between art and violin and didn...
